Starring two queer icons (Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton) and a long-time LGBTQ ally (Jane Fonda), it’s hardly a surprise this film continues to be loved by LGBTQ audiences. In the 44 years since its release, 9 to 5 has inspired a sitcom, a musical and numerous drag productions. Dolly Parton’s theme song, ‘9 to 5’ – written for the film, and backed by the sound of her acrylic nails clicking together – won an Oscar and two GRAMMY awards.

This screening is part of A Day at the Movies: a dementia-friendly film screening program at NFSA Acton, brought to you by the dementia-friendly film screening team.

Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton play a trio of office workers at Consolidated Companies who bond over their shared disgust for the Vice President: a ‘sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot’. The three women dream about getting revenge…until fantasy and reality collide, and things spiral wildly and hilariously out of control.

With a whip-smart script by Patricia Resnick and a stellar cast, this hit comedy remains an audience favourite.
